Life Skills Workshops

Coming home or starting over means learning how to live a whole new life, often with rules, responsibilities, and pressures that feel brand‑new. Our Life Skills Workshops create a safe, hands‑on space to practice those skills before the world tests them.

In small, interactive groups, we cover everyday essentials that many of us were never truly taught: how to build a realistic budget, read a lease, and stretch groceries for a week; how to communicate when you are angry without blowing up a job or a relationship; how to manage time when you are juggling work, appointments, and supervision requirements. We invite both formerly incarcerated individuals and veterans, because many of the challenges - stress, triggers, and starting from scratch - overlap. One participant told us he had always felt "dumb with money" and avoided bank accounts. Over several sessions, he learned how to track his spending on paper, set aside a small emergency fund, and spot predatory fees. Months later, he called to say he had kept his first apartment for a full year because he finally understood how to plan for rent and utilities.

Our workshops are not lectures. We use real‑life scenarios, role‑plays, and open conversations where questions are welcome and mistakes become learning moments, not reasons to feel ashamed. Topics may include conflict resolution, parenting after separation, basic digital skills for online applications, and self‑care habits that help prevent relapse into old patterns.

Life after incarceration or military service does not come with a manual. Our Life Skills Workshops act like that missing guide, offering practical tools, peer support, and a chance to practice new ways of handling old problems - so daily life feels manageable instead of like a constant test you are set up to fail.
